Oil lamp, candle lantern or electric?

How to Choose from This Category

Selecting the ideal lighting from our range depends on the specific requirements of your space and the level of brightness you wish to achieve. For task-oriented areas like a study or a bedside table, look for lamps with focused beams or adjustable shades that allow you to direct light where it is needed most. If your goal is to enhance the overall ambiance of a larger room, consider floor lamps with translucent shades that diffuse light evenly across the space. For those who enjoy spending time in the garden, portable lanterns offer the flexibility to move the light as needed, while weather-resistant materials ensure they remain beautiful throughout the seasons. Consider the color temperature as well; warm light is best for relaxation areas, while cooler light is preferred for functional spaces.

1. Decide whether you want steady ambient light (oil), quick tabletop ambience (candle), or safe indoor lighting (electric).
2. Match the finish to the room, from ornate metal for traditional decor to clean lines for modern spaces.
3. Check the fuel or bulb requirements before choosing, so the piece fits your routine.
4. Place lanterns on stable surfaces away from curtains and drafts.
5. For a gift, a hand-worked oil lamp or a decorative candle lantern is a memorable choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is delivery free?

Free delivery in the UK on orders over £69. Orders below this amount are charged standard delivery at checkout.

Can these lanterns be used safely outdoors in the rain?

While many of our lanterns are designed for outdoor use and are made from weather-resistant materials, we recommend checking the specific product details for its IP rating. Most decorative lanterns are best used in covered outdoor areas or brought inside during heavy rain to preserve their finish and ensure long-term durability.

What type of bulbs are compatible with these lamps?

Our lamps are generally compatible with standard E26 or E27 base bulbs, including energy-efficient LED, halogen, and incandescent options. We highly recommend using LED bulbs for their long life and lower heat emission, which is safer for use with various shade materials.

Do the lamps come with dimming capabilities?

Compatibility with dimming depends on both the lamp’s internal switch and the type of bulb used. Many of our desk and floor lamps are compatible with dimmable LED bulbs when used with an external dimmer switch or if they feature a built-in touch-sensitive dimming control.

How do I clean and maintain a glass lantern?

To keep your glass lanterns looking their best, we recommend regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth. For a deeper clean, use a damp cloth with a mild glass cleaner, ensuring the lantern is completely cool and disconnected from any power source before cleaning.

Are the lanterns suitable for use with real candles?

Most of our traditional-style lanterns are designed to be used with either real tea lights and pillar candles or battery-operated LED candles. If using real flames, ensure the lantern is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface and is never left unattended while lit.
